Barnwell expands blight-remediation program to include commercial properties; reappoints planning commissioners

Barnwell City Council voted on April 6 to broaden the definition of its blight-remediation contract to include commercial properties as well as residential projects. The change followed a request for clarification from the Southeastern Housing Foundation and specifies that the program, previously framed around residential work with recommended per-project limits of $6,000, will also cover eligible commercial structures.
Councilmember Louis Claytor moved to clarify the contractual definition of the Blight Program to include both residential and commercial buildings; Councilmember Jana Myers seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
Separately, the council reappointed Garnett Alexander and Sheridan Bolen to the Planning Commission by unanimous vote after a brief discussion about appointment authority and interest. Council also adopted Fair Housing Resolution 2026-1; Councilmember Ricky Dixon moved for adoption, Councilmember Jana Myers seconded and the resolution was approved unanimously.
