County seeks federal grant to pave campsites and add ADA sites at Big Hollow

Des Moines County supervisors on March 3 authorized county parks staff to submit a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant application for campsite improvements at Big Hollow, including additional paving and ADA-accessible campsites.
Parks staff said the project would use REAP funds and foundation monies as the local match required for the federal grant and that the board’s resolution is a standard procedural requirement for the application. If the grant is awarded, staff said they would advertise the project, bid it and schedule construction later this year depending on funding and contractor availability.
Board members asked how many campsites the grant would cover; parks staff said they are targeting roughly six to 10 campsites depending on available matching funds and whether full funding is obtained. The board approved the resolution supporting the grant application and members wished staff luck in seeking the award.
No contract was awarded at the meeting; staff will proceed with the grant application and return to the board if an award or contract requires board approval.
