Somers honors retirees, Seal of Biliteracy recipients and spring athletes at June board meeting

"The New York State Seal of Biliteracy recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level proficiency in English and one more world language," Melissa Golia said as recipients were called to the stage.
The board also recognized a long list of retirees from across the district. Superintendent Dr. Bronstein opened the retiree celebration and singled out Stacy Elconan for nearly 30 years of service in special education and administration; other retirees honored included classroom teachers, teaching assistants, counselors, custodians and food‑service staff who together represented hundreds of years of service to the district.
Athletics awards filled much of the program: the girls softball team won its league championship and finished the season 16–1; the girls track program captured a 15th consecutive league title; a boys track athlete (Charlie Sullivan) was noted for a 238‑foot hammer throw described in the meeting as currently ranking number one in the United States; multiple teams received scholar‑athlete team certificates.
Student board members Ally and Jimmy used their closing reports to thank the board, note a range of end‑of‑year activities and summarize results from a student survey about the district’s new cell‑phone policy (students reported strong dislike for the policy but an understanding of its purpose). Both students encouraged continued student input on policy questions.
