East Meadow honors retirees and student artists; student representatives reflect on inaugural year

The East Meadow Union Free School District Board of Education recognized a slate of retirees and presented district Pillar Awards for student artwork at its June 10 meeting.
Central administration and the board presented plaques to retirees representing more than 700 years of collective service to the district. Trustees and administrators read the names of awardees and thanked them for their decades of service.
Dr. Jerilyn Smith, director of guidance and co-chair of the district character education committee, introduced the district’s character-education art and design contest. Organizers called up dozens of student participants and winners; the board selected Maisha Kibria’s design from East Meadow High School as the official visual representation of the East Meadow Six Pillars of Character, to be used on district materials.
Two student representatives addressed the board, reviewing spring events — including scholarship nights, Flags for Freedom, AP Capstone showcases and athletic recognitions — and reflecting on their inaugural year as the first student members of the Board of Education. The students thanked administrators by name and encouraged continuing the student-representative program.
The board also thanked community business sponsors who provided prizes and experiences for contest winners, and asked principals and parents to join photos with the students. Graduation for the district was announced for June 26 at 5:30 p.m.
