Board honors student and EMS specialist whose response helped save a spectator’s life

The San Ramon Valley Unified School District board recognized two community members whose rapid response at a recent Monavista softball game helped save a spectator’s life.
Board President Susanna Ordway described how Monavista senior Sophia left the field, retrieved an AED from the press box and delivered it to the scene after a grandparent in the stands suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. An EMS specialist who happened to be on campus, Troy Vincent, and a doctor in the stands initiated CPR and used the AED; the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District then transported the person to hospital while responsive.
"Minutes matter in a cardiac emergency," Ordway said, praising Sophia and Troy for their composure and decisive action. "Their combined effort saved a life," she added.
Trustees thanked school staff, coaches and first responders and invited the community to join in extending gratitude to the student, the EMS professional and local fire personnel.
