The Morris City Council approved acceptance of an $88,498 Relief Community Forestry grant from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources during its June 9 meeting.
City Manager Johnson said the grant — part of a $7 million legislative allocation in 2025 — was awarded in full to support five objectives: emerald ash borer outreach and training, planting, young‑tree maintenance, ash‑tree removal and general forestry improvements. The project timeline runs from spring 2026 through summer 2027. Staff said the program envisions planting 42 trees (30 bare‑root and 12 container trees) and will involve public works, the tree board, Stevens County DAC and the Morris Public Library as partners.
Johnson recommended and the council approved the grant agreement by voice vote. He noted the grant application included a cost split among the five objectives (details in the packet) and that the city plans to train tree‑board members who can then train additional volunteers to reduce costs.
