Taylor’s Town Council on Nov. 6 unanimously approved acceptance of a $244,000 grant from the Ak-Chin Indian Community to upgrade a Type 3 fire apparatus, Mayor Shawn Palmer said at the meeting.
Fire Chief Willie Nelson told the council the town’s existing Type 3 truck is “constantly broken down” and that the grant will allow the department to purchase or retrofit equipment needed for more reliable wildland and structure-response operations.
The grant was described by staff as a direct award to the town for apparatus replacement; Manager Gus Lundberg was authorized to proceed with the procurement. Council Member Kris Neff moved to accept the award; Council Member Sherry Cosper Duke seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
The approval places procurement authority with the town manager and fire department; staff did not provide a vendor or delivery timeline during the meeting. The council did not discuss a local match or long-term maintenance costs at the Nov. 6 session.
The council’s next procedural step, as stated at the meeting, is for staff to proceed with the purchase process under the terms of the grant and report progress to the council.
