Henderson City Council on Feb. 11, 2019 approved Resolution 19‑08 directing staff to seek legislative authorization for a one‑percent local meal tax to fund tourism and downtown development initiatives.
City Manager Frank Frazier said the request grows from the city’s Strategic Plan objective to secure dedicated funding for city services and downtown revitalization. He told council he has discussed the proposal with state Representative Terry Garrison, who asked for additional details and indicated he would be willing to help carry the request if appropriate. Council Member Garry D. Daeke expressed strong support and said he would promote the measure in Raleigh when timing is appropriate.
Council Member Melissa Elliott moved approval of Resolution 19‑08; the motion was seconded by Council Member William Burnette and passed unanimously. Frazier said staff will keep council apprised as the proposal is refined and submitted to legislators.
