The commission approved an additional $2,590 to cover fabrication of the state’s contribution to a national 250‑year time capsule, the chair announced during the meeting.
The chair told commissioners that the national repository confirmed receipt of the governor’s letter and a special edition of the poem "This For Our Country," and said those items will be included in the capsule. "They did confirm that they received the governor's letter and the special edition of This For Our Country," the chair said, adding that the capsule would be assembled July 2 and installed in Independence Square, across from Independence Hall, on July 4.
The chair said the initial, smaller appropriation had not covered the full cost of the specially fabricated book and related conservation materials. The chair requested the additional $2,590 to pay the designer and fabricator and asked for a motion to approve the expenditure. Shane Penfield moved the motion; Julie Brew seconded.
Dr. Jones asked whether the extra funds would come from fundraising or existing budgeted cash. The chair replied that cash is on hand and the item can be paid from current funds.
The commission conducted a roll-call vote and approved the payment. The commission proceeded to the next agenda items after the vote.
The commission’s next meeting is scheduled for Aug. 5 at 3 p.m., when members expect to review photographs and a recap of July events, including the time capsule installation and related activities.
