Election staff reported administrative updates and key dates for the 2024 election cycle at the Oglethorpe County Board of Elections and Registration meeting on Jan. 8.
Steve McCannon, speaking for election staff, said registration totals for December 2023 included 10,799 active voters and 899 inactive voters, for a combined total of 11,698 — a net increase of 35 voters from the prior count. McCannon also announced qualifying for party candidates will open Monday, March 4, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. and close Friday, March 8, 2024 at 12:00 noon. The General Primary is scheduled for May 21, 2024.
The timeline for early voting and testing was provided as part of the staff report. Advanced Early Voting will begin Monday, Feb. 19, 2024. Logic and Accuracy testing for PPE is scheduled for March 12, 2024; an equipment-testing window of Feb. 5–7 was also noted if needed. Poll worker training is set for March 7, 2024, at 6:00 p.m.
The board recorded a procedural motion after Secretary Carla D. Houston read the minutes; a motion to accept the minutes as read was made and seconded, but the transcript does not record the outcome of that vote.
The board listed these dates to ensure candidates, poll workers and voters have notice of qualifying, testing and voting windows ahead of the May primary. The board's next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 5, 2024 and will include additional L&A items, training and a security briefing.
