Students cite time management and unclear guidance as senior-project hurdles, district learns

A post-project review presented June 10 identified time management and uncertain guidance as the main barriers students faced while completing senior projects, district staff told the school committee.
"Nearly 50% of all responses cited time management as the issue," a presenter said, noting competing priorities — AP and dual-enrollment coursework that continues through mid‑May, varsity sports, and part‑time work — that compressed seniors' available project time.
Other common issues included unclear interim timelines and expectations for final presentations, difficulties narrowing overly broad project scopes, and logistical problems such as coordinating schedules with adult mentors or learning new technical skills. Staff said the findings point to two practical changes for next year: clearer templates and explicit weekly check‑ins or interim deadlines to help students map their work.
Committee members recommended adding parent feedback and a more visible rubric at the project expo so visitors can quickly see the intended scope and time commitment for each project. Staff said additional post‑project surveys for parents and targeted supports for students struggling with time-management skills will be added to planning for 2026–27.
