John Anglas, president of the Board of Aldermen, announced his resignation at Tuesday's meeting, saying it will be effective when a replacement is selected under the city charter.
"Due to health reasons, I will be resigning from the Board of Aldermen effective with the selection of a replacement as provided in section 9.6.1(b) of the city charter," Anglas said, noting he had represented the third ward for over 35 years and had served as board president for more than 31 years. He thanked voters and colleagues for the opportunity to serve.
Anglas cited the charter provision that vacancies are to be filled within 45 days by remaining members of the same political party, and he expressed appreciation for accomplishments during his tenure. Board members stood and applauded; the transcript records expressions of gratitude and well-wishes.
Next steps: The board moved to executive session later in the meeting. Under the charter language Anglas cited, the remaining members of the board from his party will select a replacement within the designated timeframe; the transcript does not record the replacement candidate or selection process at this meeting.
