The Anaconda Deer Lodge County Historic Resources Board approved payment of $500 to move the Phoebe Hearst bronze and set the statue’s installation for Friday, June 12, officials said at the board’s June 4 meeting. The board also finalized plans for a June 13 dedication and reception at the Elks Lodge.
Rose Nyman, a board member, reported the statue is ready for transport and being stored in Butte; she said she had paid a mover up front “with the expectation of reimbursement.” Lynette Foulger moved to authorize the $500 transport payment and Terry LaValley seconded; the motion passed 4-0. Chair Bob Wren said the county will assist with hoisting the piece into position.
The board discussed event logistics for the June 13 dedication, agreeing to meet at the Elks Lodge at 11 a.m. to set up and to keep food-order quantities the same despite anticipating a smaller afternoon crowd. Members agreed against offering specialty cocktails for the afternoon reception. Rose prepared a community advertisement for Friday’s Leader; the board voted to accept the ad with the venue name corrected to “Elks Lodge.” Carlye Hansen, who identified herself as a member of the public assisting with setup, will walk through setup details with board volunteers.
Board members divided responsibilities for the reception: Rose will bring trays and supplies on June 11, Lynette will arrange decorations and plate the cake, Tammy Mattson will handle certain food orders and serving utensils, and Bob Wren will pick up food and oversee flags and amplification. The meeting included a printed task checklist and an attached day-of-event instructions sheet for volunteers.
The board recorded that an offer to transport the statue for $300 from a private individual, Fred Boyer, had been declined. No formal public comment was made on the item at the meeting. The next procedural step is the scheduled June 12 installation and the June 13 public dedication.
