Johnson County board reviews $74 million budget, sales-tax receipts and timetable before county vote

On June 11, the Johnson County Board of Education reviewed its proposed fiscal 2026–27 budget and a summary of recent revenues and expenditures ahead of county consideration later this month. Tina, a school staff presenter, told the board the budget was presented to the county commission budget committee on Monday and ‘‘On the 18th, the budget will be presented to the full county commission. And then on June the 29th, the county commission will vote on the 2627 budget in its entirety.’’
The presenter reported May sales tax collections of $173,718 and property tax collections of $15,086, and said the district is ‘‘$268,895 above last year’s total sales tax collections’’ and ‘‘$19,593 above last year’s total property tax collections’’; Tina also provided year-to-date expenditure rates for various funds and said June is a heavy payroll month. She noted several payroll and fund totals and stated that most expenditures so far are for salaries and benefits.
Tina explained the payment schedule for an online program, Connections Academy, saying payments typically run October through June and the June payment has already been made pending formal budget approval. She also provided reserve and appropriations summaries and noted that federal-project revenue figures were still being loaded into the system.
Board members framed the fiscal figures against local personnel challenges, with discussion noting that the budget committee approved an approximate $74 million figure for next year’s school operating budgets. Members credited recent increases in starting salaries and administrative retention efforts for helping recruitment and reducing turnover.
Next steps: the presenter said the budget will go to the full county commission June 18 for review and is scheduled for a final county vote June 29. The board did not take a separate vote on a final FY2026–27 appropriation at this meeting; the district’s submission and the county commission timeline were the key procedural developments.
