Board flags confusing medication language and debates valedictorian/class-ranking rules

During its Aug. 12 study session the Clear Creek School District No. Re-1 board identified problematic wording in the JLCD student-medication policy and debated graduation ranking rules under IKF.
On medication (JLCD), board members said the redline language from CASB created confusion by listing homeopathic, herbal and dietary supplements as "non-prescription medication" while also referencing FDA approval—an apparent contradiction because many supplements are not FDA-approved. Members said the current draft could be interpreted to require a health-care-practitioner order for routine over-the-counter medications and asked staff to research how peer districts handle standing orders and parental provision of OTC medicines.
Board members also reviewed graduation requirements and class-ranking. Public comment had questioned a 0.003 tie threshold used to distinguish top ranks. Members debated whether to keep valedictorian/salutatorian titles, how to treat the last semester in rank calculations, and whether coursework taken outside the district (for example, at Red Rocks or other college providers) should count toward top honors; some members favored requiring students to complete required courses at the district unless an exception applies for scheduling conflicts or programs not offered locally.
Next steps: staff will consult other districts on medication-administration practice and bring clarified JLCD language back to the board. The board will continue discussion on class-ranking mechanics and specific IKF phrasing to close potential loopholes and clarify exceptions.
