Fire Chief reports 41 emergency responses, equipment repair and shift to virtual training

Fire Chief Bruce Dixon told the Bolton Fire Commission on Nov. 23 that the Bolton Volunteer Fire Department responded to 41 emergencies in the previous month, including a dump-truck crash on Steeles Crossing Road, motor-vehicle crashes on Camp Meeting Road and Hop River Road (Route 6), an appliance fire, multiple hazardous-material calls and numerous medical calls.
Dixon said the department’s 2020–21 budget is being spent as expected but noted an unexpected $3,590 repair bill for engine ET334. He also reported the arrival of six new sets of turnout gear and that he had presented initial budget thoughts to the commission in advance of a late-December due date to the Town Administrative Officer for the 2021–2022 budget.
Recent training cited by Dixon included vehicle extrication and stabilization, hands-on medical trauma scenarios, live chimney-fire practicals with Truck 134, and work with self-contained breathing apparatus and turnout gear. Because of a statewide rise in COVID-19 cases, Dixon said the department will move to virtual training and meetings for the foreseeable future and has postponed the annual live burn with the Andover Fire Department until spring "due to health concerns for our members, our families and community, with the spread of the COVID-19."
Dixon also reported seven members are attending classes at the Eastern Connecticut Fire School in Willimantic. He said Marine 134 arrived on Sunday and that several members, together with First Selectman Sandy Pierog, reviewed operations with the supplier.
The report provides the latest operational and budgetary information ahead of formal budget submission later in December.
