Lake County librarian highlights Tayari Jones’s 'Kin' and launches summer reading program

Christopher Veech, county librarian and library director of the Lake County Library, gave a brief "New and Noteworthy" update, highlighting the novel Kin by Tayari Jones and announcing the start of the library’s summer reading program.
"This month, I want to highlight the novel Kin by Tayari Jones," Veech said, summarizing the book’s focus on sisterhood, motherhood and the lived Black experience in the mid‑century Jim Crow South through its two main characters, Annie and Neecie. He noted Jones’s background as a celebrated American author and a professor of creative writing at Emory University.
Veech described how patrons can obtain titles like Kin through the library’s online catalog. "You can request titles like Kin through our online library catalog which has the combined resources of Lake, Sonoma, and Mendocino County library systems," he said, adding that requesting items is free and materials are sent to a patron’s local branch for pickup.
On the summer reading program, Veech said "summer reading with your library has started" and explained the point and reward structure: children earn a sticker for every 40 points and a pin plus a VIP pass stamp at 200 points; teens and adults earn one raffle entry for every 200 points toward gift baskets or other prizes; and "once you reach 1,000 points, you'll have the honor of having your name placed in a brand new library book and get to be the first to check it out," he said. The presentation also mentioned a new summer reading lanyard and game card for participants.
Veech credited the nonprofit Friends of the Lake County Library with providing all program prizes. He directed listeners to library.lakecountyca.gov for more information and listed local library locations—Lakeport, Clearlake, Middletown, Upper Lake—and the bookmobile as service points.
The presenter closed by thanking the meeting for the time; there were no questions from board members or the public following his remarks.
