Northampton Education Foundation funds 12 small projects; committee accepts endowment awards

The Northampton School Committee accepted a slate of Northampton Education Foundation (NEF) awards at its June 11 meeting.
Cla Labdell, co-chair of the NEF small-grants committee, presented 12 grants totaling a little over $36,000 for projects ranging from a Smith Voke culinary farm-to-table lab ($1,475) to a JFK professional-development grant ($3,900) and a Bridge Street environmental education grant ($4,000). Committee members moved and approved acceptance of the small grants in a roll-call vote.
Marty Wall, speaking for the NEF endowment, said the endowment distribution program (managed with the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts) has distributed more than $1 million over its history and noted that the most recent endowment awards include a restorative-practices and student-wellness project at Northampton High School fully funded at $16,775; a JFK instrument-repair and replacement project funded at $17,500; and an $8,000 technology-access award to expand 3D-printer access for students. The committee approved acceptance of the endowment awards by roll call.
Committee members thanked NEF and community donors; members also asked staff to track award implementation and to ensure projects provide district reporting on outcomes and inclusion.
