Sunrise Elementary staff and student leaders presented the school’s theme “growing together” to the Enumclaw School Board on May 18, outlining steps taken this year to boost student well‑being, belonging and leadership.
The Sunrise principal (a first‑year principal who spoke to the board) described three building goals — listen, learn and build relationships — and explained how staff used two annual surveys (the HOPE survey and a school‑belonging measure) to identify students needing extra support. The principal reported that fall HOPE survey results showed about 68% of students reporting high levels of hope and winter results showed about 72% reporting a high sense of belonging.
Teachers and student leaders described concrete programs: a structured mentorship program pairing upper‑grade leaders with younger students (reading buddies and recess buddies), student‑led service projects including a toy drive and a cereal donation drive, and extracurricular clubs started by students (art club, garden club, book clubs, soccer). Leadership advisor Morgan Tran told the board 48 fourth‑ and fifth‑graders participated in the leadership group this year and praised the students’ commitment to community service.
Student speakers illustrated the work: one 4th‑grade student described creating posters for spirit week and helping with a toy drive; another said leadership taught teamwork and responsibility. Resource teacher Melissa Petrowski and members of the student support team described targeted interventions through the MTSS process and grade‑level data work to support students earlier and reduce special‑education referrals.
The board applauded the presentation. No formal action was required for the school presentation, which the board recorded as part of its communications and school recognition agenda items.
