The Select Board on June 8 approved a request to temporarily relocate a small steel element of the town’s 9/11 memorial from its courthouse display to the Vermont Veterans Home for a commemorative ceremony on Sept. 11, 2026.
Town Manager Dan Monks said the request came from Clark Adams and that the relocation would involve removing only the steel artifact (not the marble base) using specialized tools; staff and the veterans’ home have committed to secure handling and prompt return. Supporters on the board and staff said moving the artifact for the 25th anniversary would allow veterans who cannot easily travel downtown to participate in the ceremony.
Some public commenters objected to moving what they described as a long-standing memorial in the courthouse plaza and asked for more detail in the meeting packet about how the artifact would be handled and displayed. Select Board member Nancy White said she viewed the piece as a memorial and was uncomfortable relocating it from its courthouse setting; she voted against the request. The motion to approve carried 4–1.
The artifact will be removed, displayed for the event, and returned to its courthouse location; staff said the town will minimize disruption and ensure secure transport and display.
