Union council declares emergency, approves five-year street-levy renewal for May ballot

The City of Union council on Jan. 12 unanimously adopted Ordinance 1799 as an emergency measure to place a five-year street-levy renewal on the May ballot.
City Manager John Applegate explained the renewal is the next step required by Ohio law to certify the question to the Montgomery County and Miami County boards of elections. Applegate said the levy rate has remained unchanged since 1976 and that it currently generates approximately $364,090 annually.
Council members said the emergency designation was necessary to meet the election filing deadline. The measure was declared an emergency, and Council voted to adopt the ordinance immediately. The council did not record opposition to the measure at the meeting.
If voters approve the renewal in May, the levy would continue to fund the street levy fund for an additional five-year period. Next step: staff will prepare the required certification for county election officials.
