Mayor Joel Neuenschwander nominated Gregg Wilkes to serve as Afton Town Administrator with a 90-day review period, but the council did not ratify the appointment.
The nomination was presented during the May 8 meeting; Council Member Jason C. Inskeep moved to appoint Wilkes and Council Member Barbara Sessions seconded. After discussion and a request from council members for additional reference checks and clarification about whether the position should be part-time, Council Members Rick Merritt, Barbara Sessions and Jason C. Inskeep opposed the motion. Mayor Neuenschwander voted in favor and the motion failed.
Council members discussed whether the town code requires the administrator be appointed and the town attorney said he was reviewing that question. Council Member Inskeep recommended holding a special Afton Town Council meeting to review applications and develop a recommendation for the position.
After an executive session later in the evening the mayor again recommended hiring Wilkes, but the council took no further public action. No vote to hire was recorded; the council left the matter pending additional checks and potential further consideration at a special meeting or a future regular meeting.
