Calhoun County supervisors appoint county attorney, approve public‑works plans and routine contracts

ROCKWELL CITY, Iowa — The Calhoun County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously approved a slate of routine administrative actions, including the appointment of a county attorney to fill a vacancy and multiple public‑works approvals.
The board, consisting of Chairman Carl Legore, Vice Chairman Scott Jacobs and Member Scott Becker, voted to employ Ben Smith effective June 24, 2024 to fill the vacancy of the Calhoun County Attorney by appointment under Iowa Code §69.14A(2)(a) (motion by Scott Jacobs, seconded by Scott Becker). The board also approved an employment contract for Brian W. Blomme of Buena Vista/Calhoun/Sac to serve as County Drainage Engineer from July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025 (motion by Jacobs, seconded by Becker).
Nick Buse, Calhoun/Sac County Engineer, accompanied by Assistant to the Engineer Mike Moeller and Maintenance Superintendent BJ Musselman, presented department updates. The supervisors approved final plans for Project STPS‑CO81(84)—5E‑81 on N28 and accepted the final voucher for Project BRS‑CHBPCO13(98)—GB‑13. The board also accepted a quote from Metal Culverts for corrugated metal pipe and authorized purchase of a New Holland disc mower from Haley Equipment, Inc.; the meeting record does not list dollar amounts for those procurements (motions recorded and passed unanimously).
Other actions taken included approval of a proposed tile repair on Joint DD 39 (Calhoun/25 Pocahontas) located in SE 1/4 SW 1/4 Section 6, Williams Township, and approval of a proposed surface drain installation for Drainage District 9 in SW 1/4 NW 1/4 Section 17, Center Township (motions by Becker, seconded by Jacobs). The board also approved the FY 2024–25 Library Service contract for Calhoun County and granted a liquor license to Dollar General #18011 in Manson, effective July 2, 2024 through July 1, 2025.
EMS Director Bruce Musgrave presented a Certificate of Achievement recognizing staff members Allison Fink and Lora Garretson for noted dedication and professionalism; Musgrave was called out on an ambulance call during the meeting. Economic Development Director Theresa Hildreth reported that a "lots for sale" sign at the county Business Park has generated calls from two prospective businesses.
All recorded motions were passed unanimously ("Ayes all"). The board adjourned and scheduled its next regular meeting for Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at 9:00 a.m.
