The sheriff asked permission to apply for an American Heart Association community impact grant to buy, deploy and maintain automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and to ensure deputies receive CPR and AED training, saying the equipment and training would improve survival outcomes. The committee approved seeking that funding.
The sheriff also requested authorization to apply for a New York State Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services interoperability communications grant; the presenter said the county's portion would be approximately $1,232,212 if awarded and that the project would support interoperable communications across neighboring counties and within Allegany County. Committee members approved advancing the application.
Separately, the sheriff sought Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) grants: one under a Justice Reinvestment Initiative to establish a dedicated narcotics enforcement and interdiction unit, and another for a dedicated traffic enforcement and highway safety unit. The committee authorized submission of those applications as well.
All grant-application requests were moved, seconded and approved during the public-safety portion of the meeting; no final awards or contract details were voted on at this meeting.
