Perquimans County told it may owe roughly $75,000 for jail security upgrades as state funding remains pending

County Manager Brandon Shoaf reported the upgrade had been completed and, because anticipated state grant funding has not been approved, member counties must cover the costs. Shoaf said Perquimans County's share is 21%, approximately $75,000. Commissioner Kathryn M. Treiber told the board the Albemarle District Jail Commission had halted additional spending until the commission's fund balance increases and alternative revenue sources are explored.
The minutes characterize the cost as unplanned and not budgeted for the current year. The board did not record a formal directive to reallocate funds at the Jan. 5 meeting; follow-up budget or appropriation actions would be required to cover the expense and were not recorded in the minutes.
