Northern Local board approves contracts, personnel slate and awards Glenford roof project

The Northern Local Board of Education on June 20 unanimously approved a package of routine business items, several contracts and service renewals, and a slate of personnel actions, and awarded a roofing contract for Glenford.
Board President Dale DeRolph called the meeting to order and the board approved the minutes and financial reports after a motion from Pat Hogan and a second from Levi Dupler. Elizabeth Clark presented the treasurer’s report following the vote.
Richard France provided an update on the Mid‑East Vocational School, and Mrs. Gussler presented the superintendent’s report. Megan Miller moved and Sharon Cains seconded a motion "to approve the superintendent’s recommendations as follows," placing the list of action items before the board; the motion passed on a unanimous roll call.
Among the approved items were the 2024–25 High School Marching Generals band handbook and the 2023–24 Sheridan High School handbook; CORAS and BASA member services for 2024–25; a memorandum of understanding with North Valley Bank; Ohio Coalition for Equity & Adequacy dues for 2024–25; and a contract agreement between the Northern Local Education Association and the school board.
Financial and professional-services items approved included a proposal from Valuation Engineers for a fixed‑asset appraisal and a GAAP engagement for FY24 financial statement preparation. The board approved agreements with AI OWL and Aspire Energy and accepted the UnitedHealthcare medical insurance renewal and a Mutual of Omaha voluntary hospitalization plan, both effective July 1, 2024.
On facilities and disposals, the board awarded the Glenford roof project to Revere Roofing Company; authorized disposal of items from Holy Trinity; approved sale of an 850 John Deere tractor via sealed bids; and approved donating miscellaneous Glenford library books to students in August. The board accepted a $600 donation from Holy Trinity School to the high‑school track program.
The board approved a broad slate of personnel actions: administrative appointments including Gretchen Combs as Special Education Coordinator and Clint Rhodes as Director of Operations and Student Services; certified hires and leaves (including a five‑year contract for Makenzie Snider and a leave for Kahley Wilkins); non‑certified contract renewals; supplemental coaching and advisor assignments; several substitute custodial hires (including Samantha Johnson retroactive to June 6, 2024); the resignation of bus driver Pauline Rose; and the retirement of bus aide Deb Richards effective Aug. 1, 2024.
The board’s approval motions were recorded as unanimous on roll calls taken during the meeting. After completing business, the board moved into executive session for employment matters (see separate item) and then returned to adjourn.
