Beckford Drive widening faces roughly $600,000 shortfall; council agrees to proceed with bids

City officials told the Henderson City Council on Jan. 8 that the long-planned Beckford Drive widening project is about $600,000 short of previous cost estimates. City Manager Frank Frazier said the State indicated it could cover approximately $400,000 of the gap, leaving roughly $200,000 for the City to address.
Council discussed possible funding sources including the Powell Bill and the city’s Fund Balance, as well as design choices such as removing the sidewalk portion to reduce cost. With a decision deadline imposed by the State’s bid schedule, Council registered consensus that staff should advise the State the City is ready to solicit bids and that Council will approve additional funding as needed.
Mr. Frazier characterized the situation as the result of rising costs since initial estimates and emphasized the need to move forward so the State could schedule bidding; Council Members were unanimous in supporting the direction to proceed pending final funding arrangements. The work session record shows the Council’s consensus but not a formal appropriation at the Jan. 8 meeting; a later appropriation or budget amendment will be required to cover the City’s share.
