Levittown board honors longtime member Michael Papis as he retires after 18 years

The Levittown Board of Education on June 10 presented awards and public thanks to board member Michael Papis as he retires after more than 18 years of service.

Board President Lang and several district leaders praised Papis for his long record of attendance at school events, support for programs including full-day kindergarten and cafeteria renovations, and outreach to families. Amy O'Grady, principal of Sulk Middle School, and representatives from the Levittown United Teachers described Papis as a familiar presence at concerts, ceremonies and athletic events and credited him with sustained support for extracurricular opportunities.

"Serving this community has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life," Papis told the meeting, reflecting on nearly two decades at the table. He thanked fellow board members, central office staff and his family, and said he leaves "with a full heart, deep appreciation and complete confidence in the people who will continue this work." The board presented him with a certificate and invited additional remarks and gifts from community groups.

The recognition was part of a longer meeting that also included year-end school awards, personnel actions and routine votes. Several speakers — including union and school leaders — emphasized Papis's consistent attendance at school functions and his support for students across the district. The board marked the retirement with photos and brief tributes before continuing with the agenda.

The board is expected to swear in newly elected members at an upcoming meeting; Papis's departure leaves an open seat at the end of the month.
