Greece public forum features calls to restrict non-government flags, a construction moratorium request and Vision Zero appeal

At the start of the June 11 agenda review, the public forum drew several residents who spoke for up to three minutes each on separate topics.

Doug Warboy (1048 Long Pond Road) called on the town to adopt a resolution to fly only government flags at town facilities — the American flag, the state flag and the national flag — arguing rotating non-government flags would politicize the town center and represent “a few” at the expense of the majority.

Ryan Murphy (197 Old Country Road) asked the board to consider a moratorium on new construction north of Ladder Road (including 354 Island Cottage Road) following two recent 100-year storm events and near-miss flooding at Flynn Road. Murphy said paving large parcels would increase runoff, overwhelm storm systems and put shoreline residents at risk.

Other speakers included Brendan Bolson (440 Shliff Drive), who suggested keeping the American flag on top and allowing other flags beneath it to avoid disputes; Kyle Rosenthal (173 Celtic Lane), who urged the town to consider adopting Vision Zero to reduce traffic fatalities and to remain open and welcoming to younger residents; and Frank Femia (45 Wayne Drive), who thanked animal control for a prompt groundhog pickup.

Board staff reminded speakers that the public forum is not a question-and-answer period and that materials for the record can be submitted to the clerk. No board action on the flag or moratorium requests occurred at the meeting; these were public comments intended to register resident views.
