Judge Lawton reports spike in speeding citations, cites enforcement revenue

Judge Lawton reported to the Thayne Town Council that five defendants attended traffic school that day and that he planned to reduce future penalties to a non-reportable basis for those who attend traffic school rather than dismiss cases for excessive speeds. He told the council an analysis of citations from the first ten days of July showed more than 30 speeding tickets had been issued, only six of which went to local residents, and that enforcement brought in approximately $9,000 of revenue for the town during that period.
Lawton said he had not received complaints about the demeanor of law-enforcement officers from either the sheriff's department or the town officer. Mayor Devin Simpson mentioned plans to obtain a gavel for the judge to complement his robe.
