Board approves multiple tenures, new hires and accepts resignations; retirees honored

The board appointed several probationary classroom teachers—Kobe Nilson, Vetti Ramdani, Michael Thomas, Paige Nunan and Ashley Rodriguez—each effective Aug. 31, 2026, for four‑year probationary periods pending documentation review, with probation expiration dates set for Aug. 30, 2030. Compensation for these appointments was described as "step one MA" in accordance with the current negotiated agreement between the Valley Stream Teachers Association and the board.
The board accepted the irrevocable resignation of Joseph Shump, AIS math teacher, effective close of business June 30, 2026, and the resignation of Jenny Padilla, district clerk, effective May 29, 2026.
Separately, district leaders and trustees honored several retirees and long‑serving staff, including tributes to Tony Herwig (retirement after decades of service), Margaret Utton (27 years of service) and others. Administrators and building principals delivered remarks recognizing individual careers. The superintendent's report and building presentations also noted completed or near‑complete air‑conditioning projects at Carbonero and Brooklyn Avenue schools and listed upcoming school dates.
What happens next: Most personnel approvals took effect on the dates stated in the motions or pending required documentation. The board later moved into executive session to discuss personnel and legal matters; any further personnel deliberations will be recorded in future meeting minutes.
