At the May 26 meeting the Gulf Shores City Council approved a professional services contract with WAS Design, Inc. (not to exceed $42,300) to complete construction drawings for landscaping, lighting and irrigation on sections of E. 2nd Street connected to the Gulf Pines expansion. The funding is from the Engineering/Consulting services account.
Separately the council authorized an application to the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA) to seek up to $6,987,452 for the Windmill Ridge Access Improvements project. The application would fund roadway reconstruction, multi-use bicycle and pedestrian pathways, wetland boardwalks, a new scenic overlook, and intersection improvements intended to improve public access and safety. The grant request would include $400,000 to update previous engineering plans and environmental documentation; $6,587,452 is identified for construction costs.
The council also authorized a separate grant application to the National Academies' Gulf Research Program and NOAA Office of Education for up to $750,000. That proposed project aims to develop geospatial and technical tools, integrate resilience practices into planning, and conduct public education and pilot resilience projects across the city.
All three items were adopted unanimously. If the grants are awarded, the city will proceed with design updates, complete environmental clearances as required, and implement construction or program activities per award terms.
