Madison board approves routine business, raises paid-lunch price and agrees to explore a 6— virtual academy

The Madison Consolidated Schools Board of School Trustees cleared routine business and approved several operational items during its June 10 regular meeting, and authorized a district-led study to explore a virtual academy for grades 6 through 12.
The board approved the consent agenda (items 26-101 through 26-108 as amended), which included minutes, claims, financial reports, construction payments and personnel listings (with an amended resignation date for football coach Patrick Machino). Dr. Brown introduced new administrative hires: Adam Jones as principal and Shereice Mans as assistant principal at Anderson Elementary, and athletic director Devin Brierly introduced two new basketball coaches, David Abbott (head girls coach) and Matt Pickerell (head boys coach and incoming Anderson Elementary teacher).
On action items the board approved advertising the 2027 budget and tentative budget calendar (26-109); approved contracts for special education and related services and afterschool program renewals (26-110, 26-111); and authorized the superintendent to hire staff for the 2026-27 school year (26-112). The board also approved declaring band uniforms obsolete (26-115), revising the 2026-27 school calendar to add an asynchronous day on Nov. 23, 2026 (26-116), and increasing paid lunch prices from $2.75 to $2.90 (26-117). Dr. Brown said reduced-price lunches remain 40 cents and breakfast will continue to be free for all students.
The board approved an agreement (26-118) enabling the district to operate a fingerprinting location as a subcontractor to Net Logix, with Idemia providing equipment and technical support. The board also passed item 26-119 to form a committee to explore a district-run virtual academy for grades 6—, citing drivers such as retention, recruitment, family demand, and support for students with unique scheduling or medical needs. Dr. Brown said the district will comply with Indianas non-negotiables and IDOE requirements as it develops the proposal.
Votes on these items were taken by voice and recorded as passed with no opposition in the meeting transcript. Board members closed the meeting with congratulations to the class of 2026 and recognition of an FFA gold emblem ranking earned by the district chapter.
