Board unanimously approves personnel changes, handbooks, meal prices, fundraisers and donations

The Decatur County Community Schools board unanimously approved a package of routine district items on June 5 in Whitesburg, including personnel actions, student handbooks, athletic handbooks, meal prices with no increases, student fundraisers, donations and the disposal of obsolete equipment.
On personnel, the board accepted retirements and resignations, and approved several hires and reassignments. The record lists the retirement of corporation bus driver Chuck Shaffer (effective May 22) and resignations including Dalton Jones (SRO) and Zack Marshall (maintenance) effective June 5. Among hires and reassignments the minutes record Andrew Harper moving to director of learning and director of special education, Jason Holland as corporation school psychologist, Brittany Holt as director of transportation, and Brian Covington as director of safety and northeast campus SRO.
The board approved the 2026'2027 high-school student handbooks and athletic handbooks. Staff removed cell-phone policy language from the handbook draft pending a separate policy discussion; the staff member said the first round of policy hearings will be at the July board meeting.
The board approved meal prices for 2026'2027 with no rate increases. "There are no changes of any kind anywhere this year. We're very thankful for that," a staff member said while presenting the proposal.
The board also approved student fundraisers (including a music/theater campaign to raise money for a sound system), and accepted donations: $1,000 to North Decatur High School's academic team from Kaylin Lindsey; $3,100 to South Decatur Elementary from Westport Baptist Church for meals to send home with students; and $500 to South Decatur Elementary from CRF Roofing Restoration to help pay negative lunch balances. Finally, staff listed obsolete technology and classroom materials recommended for disposal so inventory can be updated; the board approved that action.
All motions in this package were recorded as passing unanimously, 7-0; the meeting record did not list individual roll-call votes.
