The Harbor and Coastal Zone Management Commission on June 18 agreed to prepare a letter to the state for a consistency review of the South Berry Avenue bridge replacement over Otter Creek, asking that Otter Creek be identified as locally significant habitat under the village’s local waterfront revitalization plan (policy 7a).
Chair members said Otter Creek is listed in the commission’s catalog of locally critical areas and that the state’s consistency materials did not reflect that designation. The commission tasked Commissioner Simon with drafting the first version of the letter and circulating it to the commission and chair for review; commissioners asked that the draft be available for the next meeting so that all members could see the text.
Why it matters: commissioners said the South Berry Ave bridge is critical infrastructure for Shore Acres residents in the event of coastal flooding and that the state should be aware of locally significant habitat protections that bear on the review. The commission did not set a formal deadline for the letter but asked for a draft ahead of the next meeting.
