Pleasantville council tables request to join ICE 287(g); approves police staffing and pay changes

Mayor Jason Henderson opened the Feb. 12 Village of Pleasantville council meeting and the council took up multiple police-related items, including a request from Chief Garver to enroll the department in Immigration and Customs Enforcement27s 287(g) program.
Chief Garver told the council the 287(g) memorandum of understanding would allow Pleasantville officers to run immigration ID checks locally rather than relying on ICE to perform those queries, and that participation could bring financial assistance to support payroll and equipment. Councilwoman Courtney VanDyke moved to table the application until Feb. 20 so members could review the MoU documents; Councilwoman Korry Harrier seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Mayor Henderson said he would email the MoU to council for review.
The council also approved a package of personnel and pay changes for the police department. By unanimous vote the council adopted Ordinance 02-12-26-01, which makes a recently added full-time officer official on the department roster and adds an armed bailiff to authorized roles. The council then approved Resolution 02-12-26-04, which raises the full-time officer27s pay to $25.00 per hour and authorizes $1,000 per pay period for the chief.
Chief Garver reported department activity for January, citing 240 calls for service in the month, including 142 traffic stops and a range of public-safety incidents. He also briefed the council on operational items: Axon body-camera training scheduled for Feb. 13, plans to upfit squad car #2 with a computer, radar and internet access for a part-time officer, and the early start of the Bremen policing contract on Jan. 30.
The meeting record shows no vote to authorize 287(g) participation; the council instead chose additional review. The next step is the scheduled review of the MoU documents ahead of the Feb. 20 meeting where council may revisit authorization.
