Bolton firefighters report 57 October calls, new training and budget planning

The Bolton Volunteer Fire Department answered 57 emergency calls in October and 472 year-to-date, Chief Bruce Dixon told the Bolton Fire Commission on Nov. 13, 2017.
The report compared 2017 activity to 2016, when the department responded to 540 calls, and highlighted several multi-agency incidents. "BVFD answered 57 emergency calls in October," Dixon said, noting responses to accidents, medical calls and several structure fires in Hebron and Bolton.
Dixon described storm-related responses on Interstate 384, Route 6 and Route 44 that involved downed trees, utility poles and wires. He said a large brush fire burned about seven acres and left sections of town around Route 44 without power for approximately ten hours.
On training, Dixon said BVFD participated in a live-burn drill at the Bloomfield Training Facility with the Tolland Fire Department; 25 firefighters trained inside the structure while others provided outside support. "Chief Dixon organized and oversaw this training exercise," the minutes state.
Dixon also reported a change in support for the Eastern Connecticut Fire School: the state raised the school's funding from $20,000 to $150,000 for the fiscal year, and Firefighter I and II classes are now planned for January 2018 after fall classes were canceled earlier in the year because of the budget situation.
He said he presented preliminary figures for the 2018–2019 BVFD budget to the commission that evening but no formal budget vote was recorded.
The commission's next meeting is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 11, 2017.
