Board approves course guide changes, special‑education contract, staffing and policies; several items tabled

The Humboldt Unified School District governing board approved a set of routine and programmatic items at Thursday’s meeting while tabling two matters for further review.
Approved items included updates to Bradshaw Mountain High School’s 2026–27 course description guide — notably added wording allowing JOTC (years three and four) to offer dual-enrollment credit through Yavapai College and removal of a $10 per‑college‑credit fee for several courses — following a presentation by Dr. Russell. "These classes will allow students who successfully complete the classes to earn both... certificates through Yavapai College," Dr. Russell told trustees.
The board renewed the district’s agreement with Ascend, a private day school serving students with autism; staff reported five district students currently attend the placement. Trustees asked that administration produce a summary spreadsheet of special-education contracts, student impact and funding sources to give the board broader context when future contracts come before it.
Personnel and administrative actions that passed included approval of an additional 1.0 FTE sixth-grade teacher at Liberty Traditional School to address rising enrollment and waiting lists; appointment of Mrs. Melissa Helmick as treasurer of student activity accounts; and transportation staffing and pay‑grade adjustments to reflect retirements and competitive wages.
Trust policies: the board adopted Section 5 of the district’s trust policies, effective July 1, 2026, after a second reading and discussion about the ability to make future revisions.
Tabled items: the Classroom Site Fund performance-pay plan was tabled for legal and auditor review (see separate coverage). A proposed memorandum of understanding with Animal Disaster Services was also tabled after trustees sought a certificate of insurance and clearer operational and cleanup responsibilities; staff will return the MOU once those elements are confirmed.
