Humboldt Education Foundation reports scholarships, hungry-kids distribution and a July backpack fair

Humboldt Education Foundation leaders Miss Jackson and Mr. Walker updated the Humboldt Unified School District board on charitable activity and community programs at the district’s June regular meeting.
The presenters said the foundation awarded about $5,000 in small grants during quarter three, held a teacher-of-the-year banquet with 125 attendees, and presented five $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors. They also described the foundation’s Hungry Kids program, reporting that it distributed more than 64,000 meals during the past school year.
Miss Jackson outlined plans for a Back-to-School Health & Wellness Fair on July 20 at the Finley Toyota Center area, saying the foundation anticipates distributing about 1,600 backpacks and providing free haircuts, vision screenings, dental checks and connections to health and social-service providers. "We will be giving out close to 1,600 backpacks," Miss Jackson said, and asked board members and the public to volunteer for packing and distribution shifts in mid‑July.
Mr. Walker described recent fundraising, including a $20,000 grant from the Jewish Community Foundation and a $5,000 grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield, and said the foundation will coordinate with school librarians in August about donated children's books. When trustees asked whether donated books would go directly to students or to school libraries, presenters said the funds were freshly received and allocation plans will be made with librarians in August.
Trustees praised the foundation’s volunteer-run efforts and asked for the volunteer sign-up link; presenters said a sign-up form would be circulated and that local radio will help publicize the event. The board did not take formal action on the presentation.
Next steps: the foundation will finalize book-placement logistics in August and circulate volunteer sign-up details for the July event.
