Covington commissioners approve personnel moves, leases and service contracts, and adopt CDBG/HOME plan

The Covington Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a series of personnel promotions, leases, service contracts and program paperwork at its regular meeting Tuesday night.
The board, convened by Mayor Ronald L. Washington at 6:00 p.m., voted to promote Matthew Schmiaade to light equipment operator and Joseph Rump to heavy equipment operator in the Public Works Department. Commissioners also approved contracts authorizing Sun Life for medical stop-loss insurance coverage and Blau Mechanical to repair the Fire Department’s HVAC system.
The board approved an agreement with J.K. Meurer Corporation to install a temporary court and walking path at Kenney Shields Park and authorized lease agreements for space at the Kentucky Career Center with the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the Northern Kentucky Area Development District. Commissioners adopted the city’s CDBG/HOME Annual Action Plan and reappointed and appointed several commission advisory members, including the reappointment of Jessica Spencer to the Urban Forestry Board and appointments of Julie Fischer Burke to the Board of Architectural Review and Development and Sherman Flucas to the Covington Recreation Committee.
Commissioner Tim Downing moved and Commissioner Tim Acri seconded the motions for the consent items; Mayor Washington called for discussion and, with none, each item was approved by voice vote. When a roll call vote was requested for ORD-128 (directive on delinquent accounts), the motion carried 5–0.
Why it matters: The actions formalize routine personnel changes, preserve continuity of maintenance and insurance coverage for city operations, secure short-term recreational improvements at a neighborhood park and finalize the city’s CDBG/HOME plan for community development activities. The agenda items carried no recorded opposition.
The meeting also included a presentation by Kentucky State Representative Stephanie Dietz and a retirement proclamation for Mary Kay Connolly; the commission recessed at 6:25 p.m. and adjourned at 6:32 p.m.
