The Washington County Personnel Committee on June 11 approved multiple staffing requests and agreed to refer the Sheriff's proposed non‑union hourly schedule for special patrol officers to the Finance Committee.
Committee members voted to accept requests to refill a building maintenance mechanic (resigned May 13), restore a DPW highway worker vacancy that resulted from an internal promotion, and fill three caseworker positions in the Department of Social Services, with staggered vacancy dates into June.
On a separate motion, the committee approved adding one seasonal highway worker for the summer flagging season; the motion was made by Sue and seconded by John and Lance. The committee then considered the Sheriff's request to adopt a non‑union hourly schedule for special patrol officers effective July 1 and moved the item to Finance for further review. During discussion, members clarified the positions are contracted with the Cornell School District and that the county functions as a pass‑through payer for those costs: "We're just a pass‑through," one member said.
What’s next: DPW’s seasonal position was approved for immediate hiring, and Finance will review the Sheriff's pay schedule and report back to the committee.
