Cherokee County to consider opioid-abatement allocations for community resource guide and juvenile court testing

Staff presented a request to allocate $39,000 of opioid-abatement funds to Cherokee Focus to cover Phase I of a multi-platform community resource guide. The county said the guide will centralize treatment, recovery, mental health, housing and other supports for people affected by opioid misuse and that the project aligns with approved uses under the National Opioid Settlement.
A separate request from the juvenile court would allocate $30,000 of opioid-abatement funds to pay for drug testing (urine drug screens at $35 each and hair tests at $85 each) through the Cherokee County Drug Lab for parents whose children are in care due to parental substance abuse. Judges Jones and Spites are the named requestors in the consent description.
Staff also described a juvenile court grant application to the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council and a required memorandum of understanding with Evidence Based Associates Inc. to provide grant-covered services for juvenile diversion and multi-systemic therapy for about 13 youths and their families; the MOU is contingent on receipt of the grant and requires no county match.
The consent agenda also included acceptance of a 2025 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant for $17,096 to the Sheriff’s Office and other routine consent items.
What’s next: These items were listed on the consent agenda for board consideration. Staff said the Cherokee Focus project will return with a Phase II funding request at a later meeting; the juvenile court’s grant and drug-testing requests require budget amendments and routing of award documents upon grant approval.
