Curriculum director: new K–12 literacy statute requires district‑wide plan but provides no additional funding

During administrators’ reports on March 25, Curriculum Director Sonya Tysdal told the board that a new K–12 literacy statute will require Weston County School District #1 to expand its current K–5 literacy plan to a district‑wide K–12 plan.
Tysdal said the state “didn't add any additional funding to this bill,” and that three sets of standards (English language arts, Career and Technical Education, and Social Studies) are currently being reviewed in committee. She said she is working with High School Principal Bryce Hoffman to update the district’s graduation policy to meet Chapter 3 requirements; the minutes note the policy must be in place by Nov. 1.
Tysdal presented the requirement as a compliance and planning task rather than a change accompanied by new state resources; the minutes do not include an estimated cost or a staffing plan to meet the new mandate. The board discussed the impacts of SF81 later in the meeting and listed policy review for future agendas.
