Weston County School District #1 trustees heard a series of recognitions and event updates at their Feb. 11 meeting, highlighting student achievement, community support and upcoming activities.
Administrators recognized the Math Counts team (Thairon Sidener, Eden Novak, Isabel Parsons, Nolan Proffer) for finishing third as a team and qualifying for the state competition; Thairon Sidener was the individual district champion. Other student recognitions included 7th-grade poetry winners and volunteers who unloaded a Totes of Hope delivery.
Athletics and donations: High School Principal Bryce Hoffman recognized Gabe Hoover as the Eastern 3A Conference champion in the 200 IM. Angie Holliday reported that Herb and Chris French donated $10,000 to the golf program and $10,000 to repairs at the aquatic center.
Events and student activities: Elementary Principal Brandy Holmes said intramural volleyball has 21 participants and kindergarten registration is open. Hoffman said the Career & Trade Fair is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 18, with more than 100 vendors; space constraints required moving colleges into the auditorium foyer. Andrea Gregory rescheduled the ASVAB exam and, because of budget limits, will administer it herself with National Guard support from Gillette.
Student Representative Preslee Fitzwater reported FFA and FBLA activities, a Feb. 26 silent auction whose proceeds will go to the Sunshine Project and the Dollick family (student Brie Dollick requires dental treatment after an athletic injury), and that Student Council raised $1,461 for Make-A-Wish Wyoming and families affected by cancer. Fitzwater told the board district post-season sports include swimming, wrestling and basketball.
The board acknowledged these recognitions and event preparations; no formal action was taken beyond the consent agenda and routine approvals.
