Northfield council hears road reconstruction progress, generator delay and wrong skid-steer delivery

Engineers and service staff told the Village of Northfield council on June 26 that several public-works matters remain active as street reconstruction proceeds and equipment issues are resolved.
Village Engineer Daniel Collins said the Cambridge Drive, Stratford Drive and a portion of Huntington Drive are being reconstructed; contractors have removed pavement and most locations currently have one travel lane open with temporary bridges to maintain driveway access. Collins said the work will cause some inconvenience while crews complete paving in stages.
Collins also reported that a generator has been installed at the Houghton Service Department building but is not yet online because First Energy must install a new 400-AMP service pole in front of the building before the system can be energized.
Service Department Superintendent Jason Walters briefed council on a delivery error: a skid steer that arrived lacked the features the Village ordered. "The company has been told to pick up the improper machine and provide the Village with the correct model," Walters said; the Village has not accepted the equipment and it is unclear whether the correct model is available. Walters requested a Roads and Public Works Committee meeting to discuss ordinance updates and next year’s budget; Council scheduled that meeting for Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at 6:00 p.m.
Councilmember Gary Vojtush relayed resident complaints about dump trucks on the Cambridge project traveling on Cranbrook; Collins said the contractor instructed drivers to avoid new streets and he would follow up.
Separately, Mayor Jenn Domzalski reported repeated problems with baseball-game parking on Magnolia that block travel lanes and leave garbage in yards; the Village has posted no-parking signs and warned the baseball league it could be barred from using the field if problems persist. Councilmember Vojtush asked about traffic cameras; Law Director Brad Bryan said cameras are primarily used for speed enforcement under state law and he does not believe they may be used to enforce stop-sign violations in their jurisdiction.
