Council finalizes hiring of Jon Rorie as City Manager after brief procedural challenge

The Washington City Council ratified the employment agreement for Jonathan “Jon” Rorie as the City of Washington City Manager after the consent agenda was approved on April 13.
Councilmember Joe Davis moved to remove the ratification from the consent agenda for separate discussion; the motion failed for lack of a second. Council then approved the consent agenda as amended. After closed-session personnel discussions, Council returned to open session and thanked interim City Manager Bobby Roberson for his service. By motion of Mayor Pro tem Nick Fritz, effective this Friday the city will no longer require Roberson’s services and Jon Rorie will assume the City Manager role.
Mayor Pro tem Fritz said council members were impressed with Rorie during the hiring process and noted that the council extended an offer which Rorie accepted and signed. Council’s action formalized the earlier hiring steps and directed staff to implement the employment agreement and effect the transition.
Council did not vote separately on the employment agreement in open session; the agreement was ratified through the approved consent agenda and administrative steps taken in closed session and returned to open session with a subsequent motion to end Roberson’s interim responsibilities.
