Board hears summer program and facilities updates as capital work continues

District staff provided the board with a summer instructional update and a detailed rundown of capital projects under way across Hobbs Municipal Schools.

An instruction presenter identified in the transcript as Godswill said the district is running no-cost summer learning for roughly 704 students: 382 K–5 students in a three-week "kids college" program, 136 middle school students in summer classes, 20 high school students taking a science course for credit, and 166 students enrolled in a pre-AP advanced math course with five hours of instruction per day. Godswill thanked teachers for giving up parts of their summer to provide training and instruction.

Facilities staff (Mr. Gunn) updated trustees on construction at Harding Elementary and Heiser Middle School, reporting that multiple trades are on site (roofing, priming, ceiling grids, painting) and tile work will begin soon. Gunn described progress on parapet walls, gym work and furniture-selection meetings; he said some interior projects are being completed in-house to reduce costs.

Ongoing maintenance and projects include carpet replacement and a new assistant-principal office at Stone Elementary, roof-drain replacement at Broadmoor, sewer assessments at Mills (potentially in coordination with the city), fencing and additional cameras at several campuses, and pavement sealing and striping carried out on a multi-year rotation. Gunn shared comparative photos of recent work at Hays and Del Norte Middle School to show progress over the past year.

Trustees asked timing questions and noted that some projects started planning in 2019; staff said most construction should wrap up in the coming months and that the district continues to coordinate with architects, contractors and the Public Education Department for approvals and funding notices.
