Freeburg committees report power outage, solar concept and fiber talks; new lineman to start May 26

At the May 18 Village of Freeburg board meeting, committee reports detailed recent electric system problems, early-stage development proposals and infrastructure conversations. Trustee James 'Mike' Blaies, chair of the Electric Committee, told the board that on April 27 the village lost feed to Ameren and had to run local generation for several hours. A north-circuit trip during that storm left some customers — including several on North Monroe Street — without power overnight after a wire was broken by high winds.
Blaies also reported the committee is exploring whether an IMEA energy-efficiency grant could be used to upgrade the pool's exterior lighting to LED fixtures. Village officials met with Socket Fiber representatives and the contractor; a locate meeting is forthcoming as the village advances discussions about potential fiber deployment. The committee deferred breaker replacement work until cooler weather to avoid risking townwide outages under higher summer loads.
In staffing updates, Blaies announced a new lineman, Jack Mayer, is expected to start May 26, 2026; wire for the job has been ordered and maintenance on a spare breaker has begun.
Separately, the combined Planning & Zoning board received two presentations: concept plans, a floor plan and elevations for a planned development for the Foster property on North State Street from Chad and Ryan Murphy, and a commercial solar project proposal from AES Solar for land northwest of the village. The minutes record these as initial presentations; no approvals or formal zoning actions were taken at this meeting.
Trustee Robert 'Bob' Kaiser reported Waste Management should provide a draft contract to the village next week; Public Works noted Motor Fuel Tax materials letting will open for bids on May 27, 2026. The board adjourned at 7:47 p.m.
