Planning Commission tables data-center ordinance, plans further review ahead of moratorium

The New Haven Planning Commission on June 10 voted to table a proposed data-center zoning ordinance and directed staff to continue refining a draft template and to compare it with models used by nearby jurisdictions.
David, the village planner, described a template circulated to the commission and noted prior work with other communities: "We issued a template to the planning commission a couple months ago," he said, and commissioners discussed spacing requirements, setback constraints, and the need to consult legal counsel about potential exclusionary risk.
Commissioners agreed there is time to craft local rules before a moratorium window begins in the winter; members flagged January or February as the period when the commission should ramp up work. The commission asked staff to distribute Lennox’s modified ordinance and to use GIS modeling to test spacing and siting scenarios.
The commission then voted to table the data-center ordinance for additional review and directed staff to return with comparisons and recommended language at a future meeting.
