The committee’s constable told the Shellfish Committee on Sept. 18 that grant inspections will begin in October and will focus initially on minimum productivity checks tied to grant purchases. The constable said they will coordinate inspection times with grant recipients to avoid surprise visits and plans to broaden regulatory items checked in later inspections.
"In the next couple weeks, starting in October, I'm gonna arrange with you all times that work for you to come out and check out your grant," the constable said, adding the checks will focus on productivity and purchases from past years and the current season. The constable said this is not something they believe has been done in recent history and that the approach is intended to be practical given the sporadic schedules of participants.
Committee members welcomed the plan and asked that future updates and outlines be sent with agendas before meetings; the constable said they expect to include updates with meeting agendas going forward.
